10 Ways to get Experience

Things you can do to prepare yourself for the world of work.
The leap from school to the world of work can seem daunting but the good news is you already have many of the skills you need to succeed. It's just a case of putting them into practice and building up your confidence. Potential employers will look favourably on young people who have gone above and beyond their schooling to gain real-life experience and here are some ways to do just that... 

​Extra-curricular activities

​You can learn lots of skills through additional activities such as:
​

Duke of Edinburgh Award – develops key skills like team work, communication and leadership

Becoming a prefect, a student rep or a buddy – demonstrates your ability to take responsibility.

Organising events or fundraising – shows time management and problem-solving ability.

After-school clubs

Joining a sports team develops key skills such as working as part of a team and achieving goals.

Being part of a music or drama club will develop confidence, creativity and communication.

Do you have a favourite subject? Why not join an academic team such as the Maths or English club. This can help you to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs or further study.

​Work shadowing

​Do you have a burning passion to work in a particular industry but unsure what the reality is like?

Why not see if you can observe a real-life workplace?

​This gives you an idea of a working day, what the work environment is like and what career options are available.

Part-time work

​Getting work experience out-of-school hours or during school holidays shows employers that you are dedicated and hard-working.

Having a part-time job will give you good experience as well as some extra cash!

​Part-time work is valued by future employers even if it is not relevant to the career you want as it shows you are have a can-do attitude and are committed.

Volunteer

​Volunteering is a great way to grow your confidence, learn new skills and get out and about in your local community.

​There are lots of opportunities to make a difference, including volunteering in a charity shop or mentoring someone younger than you.

Travel the world

Some young people choose to take time out after school to travel before continuing with their further education or work plans.

Working while travelling is a good way to gain valuable experience that you can add to your CV or discuss at interview.

​You can do this by volunteering or getting a job, and it demonstrates a can-do attitude, independence and initiative.

Internships

If you have a clear idea of the career path you'd like to take, an internship can give you a head start in your chosen vocation, especially in a competitive industry.

​Completing an internship will show the employer what skills you can bring to the business and is a great first step on your career ladder.

​Work experience

Work experience is a great option if you are unsure what industry you'd like to work in.

There are lots of opportunities for a work placement in your local area.

To find out about opportunities speak with your pupil support teacher or DYW School Coordinator, who liaise with the Shetland Islands Council Work Placement Coordinator

​Do jobs for neighbours or relatives

Doing odd jobs for people like cutting grass, walking a dog, helping an elderly neighbour with their shopping, or painting a fence, isn't just kind, it can be useful for your CV too.

​This experience shows employers that you are helpful and have a good work ethic.


Training courses

Training courses can help to build your skills and confidence.

These can last a few days, several weeks, or longer. 

Courses can be in a specific sector, such as hospitality, or they can be more general courses which can help your overall employability skills.
