DYW Shetland facilitated a visit for Aith Junior High School to Shetland UHI earlier this month, it was a great chance for the year group to link their biology curriculum to the Aquaculture Industry practice and give pupils an insight into employment opportunities.

The visit started with a presentation that covered a wide range of aquaculture and marine environment topics, followed by 2 lab sessions.  The pupils were introduced to both shellfish and fin fish aquaculture – the college had caught crabs and fish in a creel for the pupils to engage in practical learning sessions in the lab.  Pupils were also shown eggs & freshly hatched salmon alevin, they took water temperatures and had basic fish anatomy & health explained to them.

The pupils enjoyed their visit and their teacher commented on how well the visit complimented the curriculum.

A huge thanks to Shetland UHI for welcoming the pupils from Aith Junior High School and giving them a great experience.
