On Tuesday, February 20th 2024, Developing the Young Workforce Shetland worked in partnership with Anderson High School, to host a local opportunities and apprenticeship event at Clickimin Leisure centre, Lerwick.
The event enabled 600 Senior Phase pupils in Shetland to attend, along with accompanying teachers, with an opportunity for parents to attend during the day. 46 Exhibitors attended the event, showcasing a variety of opportunities: Current and future job vacancies, Apprenticeships, Volunteering Opportunities and local training opportunities.
We also organised and facilitated an Apprenticeship information session in the evening for parents/carers, delivered by the UHI Shetland Vocational Training team. The session allowed parents/carers to gather information on apprenticeship opportunities in Shetland, pathways, careers, subject choices and opportunities.
80% of the pupils felt after attending the Local opportunity/apprenticeship event that they felt more confident around world of work. 90% said the exhibitors provided helpful information about careers and opportunities available to young people.
Teachers feedback: “The local ops event has demonstrated once again that it is an integral mainstay in school calendar for our Senior Phase pupils across Shetland. The opportunity for pupils to engage face-to-face with employers and service providers really encourages our young people to hear about the opportunities that are available on their doorstep. I know that many students have gone on to pursue work experience, gain part/ full- time employment and applied for places at Shetland UHI since the event in February.”
Feedback from employers:
“Great event- keep doing them!”
“Overall a well organised event! Many thanks for sorting it. Well done to all involved!”
“Well organised event, provided good opportunity to speak to young people about their future and to encourage to further their education to make them ready for apprenticeship”
Ness Engineering and Living Lerwick attended the event and highlighted their experience of attending. They felt it helped bridge the gap between education and employment, providing young people with the resources, and support they need to succeed in the workforce.
